New targeted relief of surtax on steel and aluminum from the U.S.

April 29, 2019

The Government of Canada published an amendment to the Order Amending the United States Surtax Remission Order (No. 2019-1), which provides further targeted relief on a range of products normally subject to the surtax on steel and aluminum from the U.S.

On July 1, 2018 Canada applied countermeasures on imports of steel, aluminum, and other products from the U.S. in response to the unjustified tariffs imposed by the United States on Canadian steel and aluminum.

The countermeasures against U.S. imports created challenges for Canadian manufacturers, in particular for those that rely on U.S. steel and aluminum imports. The new Order further expands the scope of steel and aluminum products imported from the U.S. that are eligible for remission of surtaxes in cases where contractual obligations or exceptional circumstances require Canadian companies to continue importing U.S. steel and aluminum

The measures announced this week are in addition to relief granted in October and in December.
