Canadian legislation to counter steel dumping gets Royal Assent

June 28, 2019

Bill C-101 received Royal Assent on June 21, 2019. Entitled "An Act to amend the Customs Tariff and the Canadian International Trade Tribunal Act", the legislation temporarily removes the two-year moratorium on the imposition of safeguard measures on imports previously subject to safeguards.

This modification gives the Government the flexibility needed to stabilize Canada's market and protect Canadian industry from the harmful effects of substantiated surges in imports.

The Canadian Government says it is closely monitoring the import situation and stands ready to take appropriate action should there be evidence that a surge in steel imports may be harming Canadian workers and producers.
