Global Affairs Canada announced the launch of consultations to review the allocation policy for the Origin Quotas for vehicles for export to the European Union (EU) under the Comprehensive and Economic Trade Agreement (CETA).
Under CETA the EU agreed to establish a 100,000 unit origin quota for exports of vehicles from Canada. The origin quota year extends from January 1 to December 31, inclusive.
Exports of vehicles that are eligible under the CETA origin quota are subject to export controls under the Export and Import Permits Act. Accordingly, an export permit is required for shipments of vehicles from Canada to the EU in order to obtain the preferential tariff treatment under the origin quota.
There are various ways in which this Origin Quota can be allocated and administered. In order to administer this Origin Quota in an effective manner, the Canadian government is seeking the views of stakeholders with an interest in Canada's automotive sector.
Canadians have until 11:59 p.m. (Pacific Time) on April 22, 2020, to submit their responses, comments and suggestions.
