Broadcast Message: End of Steel Safeguard Tariff Rate Quotas

This message pertains to imports of certain steel goods (heavy plate and stainless steel wire) that are subject to the Order Imposing a Surtax on the Importation of Certain Steel Goods.

The Government of Canada imposed final safeguards in the form of tariff rate quotas on imports of certain heavy plate and stainless steel wire goods for the period from May 13, 2019 to October 24, 2021.

The purpose of this message is to inform importers that these safeguard measures will expire after October 24, 2021. As such, after this date, importers will no longer be required to apply for shipment-specific import permits to import subject goods free of the safeguard surtax and are to use General Import Permit No. 80 or 81, as applicable, for their shipments.

Furthermore, after October 24, 2021 the Notice to Importers, Serial No. 983 will no longer be in effect.

Importers are reminded that the Government of Canada has added reporting and recordkeeping requirements to General Import Permits No. 80 and 81. Providing complete and accurate information in customs declaration forms will enhance the reliability of the data and reduce the burden of post-clearance auditing. Importers may refer to the Notice to Importers, Serial No. 1032 for detailed information on these import requirements and procedures.
