Global Affairs to conduct impact assessments on a Canada-ASEAN free trade agreement

March 16, 2022

In November 2021 Canada and ASEAN agreed to proceed with free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is a regional intergovernmental organization comprising 10 member states. Established by Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand in 1967, it was later joined by Brunei, Cambodia, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Myanmar and Vietnam.

As a group, ASEAN member state economies represent Canada's sixth-largest trading partner (2020).

The Canadian government is now seeking the views of Canadians on the potential impacts and opportunities of a Canada-ASEAN FTA with respect to the environment - including changes in greenhouse gas (GHG) and air pollutant emissions - to inform an initial environmental assessment. The government will also examine gender and other diversity considerations through a gender-based analysis plus (GBA+).
