Canada reports progress in free trade talks with India

August 30, 2022

Canada's Minister of International Trade, Mary Ng, spoke with India's Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal during their monthly virtual meeting last week.

Minister Ng emphasized the value of advancing trade and investment relations between Canada and India and underlined the progress in negotiations for a Canada-India early progress trade agreement held in July and August 2022.

Minister Ng expressed her appreciation of the spirit of cooperation and compromise that has been a hallmark of the negotiations, and reaffirmed Canada's goal of maintaining momentum in the fourth round of negotiations, which are scheduled to take place in September.

Canada and India re-launched talks on a free trade agreement following a Ministerial Dialogue held in New Delhi in March 2022.

At the time both sides agreed to consider an interim agreement or Early Progress Trade Agreement (EPTA) that could be concluded early as a transitional step towards the CEPA.
